Crime
Flint, Flint
Murder of Thomas Roberts, Northop, yeoman, by striking him on the head with a gun. Prosecutor and the deceased had been drinking together at the Ship Inn and were called out to extinguish a bonfire with their sticks. One Owen Lewis cried out 'Wynne'; prosecutor and deceased disarmed him of his stick 'whereupon a battle ensued'. Partisan feelings were running high in 1734 when Sir John Glynne and Sir George Wynne ran a bitter campaign to win votes for borough election to Parliament. See also Peter D. G. Thomas, 'Sir George Wynne and the Flint Borough Elections of 1727 to 1741', Flintshire Historical Society, Vol 20 (1962). Inquest records murder and that the deceased and others had been shot in the face. more
