Murder of John Hughes by striking him on the head with a fire shovel during a fight, whereby pieces of skull lacerated his brain. Affidavits record that David Hughes, the deceased's brother killed him. The Hughes' family, consisting of three brothers were a 'fighting, quarrelsome people' who 'had an inclination to quarrel with the Jones's'. Indicted with his brother, both nicknamed the 'Lads of the Coomb'. The two sets of brothers had previously attended a cockfight. Inquest records manslaughter and that others unknown were implicated. more
