Theft of horse from a field; recovered at Blue Bell inn, Pontypool, co. Mon. Four examinations and confessions admit participation in other felonies including highway robbery of people returning home from Swansea market with John and Eynon Watkin and Jenkin Griffiths and stealing horses with Jenkin Thomas, aged about 60, Jacob Henry Evan and William Phillip. Apparently, the last group caught three ponies in co. Brec. since 'they had the power from the Devil in writing upon paper, which they had had from [a] conjuror, it was to remain in force for three years. I [the prisoner] received the writing which gave me the power from Jenkin Thomas...' When 'I [the prisoner] had not this paper in my custody I could not catch them [the ponies] more than any other person'. more
