Denbigh, Henllan

Murder of John Foulk, Henllan, blacksmith, in a disturbance on his way home from Cappel Wakes. Deceased had been in the company of thirty or forty Henllan people armed with sticks. They had been involved in a dispute with a group of about twelve Denbigh people, Englishmen and factory people who had also attended the Wakes. According to one person present, the country people were 'not for the Denbigh people but for the Englishmen'. Fighting ensued provocative gestures and shouting, in which the deceased received a fatal blow. The deceased had inquired at the Wakes 'which of Mr Mostyn's scribblers was the champion of Denbigh' and on receiving a reply answered in Welsh 'Myn Diawl myfi a'i champia fo'. Anti English riot. more
