Denbigh, Wrexham

Seditious libel by publishing a pamphlet entitled 'The Principles of Government in a Dialogue between a Scholar and a Peasant", retitled "The Principles of Government in a Dialogue between a Gentleman and a Farmer", in 1783. The pamphlet had been written by the prisoner's eminent brother-in-law, Sir William Jones. Prisoner supported in defending the indictment by the Society for Constitutional Information of which his brother-in-law was a member. As it was possible that the jury had been biased by the circulation of another pamphlet ( included in this file ) on the subject of the role of jurors, the trial was moved to Shrewsbury and took place in August 1784. See NLW MSS 2598C for copies of the pamphlets and the court proceedings at Wrexham and at Shrewsbury. No indictment. See also 4/60/3/5. See also A. Cynfael Lake, 'Rhai ystyriaethau pellach ynghylch awduraeth 'Yr Anterliwt Goll', NLWJ Cyfrol 27 (1992); Emyr Wyn Jones, 'Yr Anterliwt Goll.....(LL.G.C. 1984 ); and Emyr Wyn Jones, 'Diocesan Discord, a family affair, St Asaph, 1779-1786'; [Emyr Wyn Jones], 1988. more
